Today I’ll show you how to find low competition keywords fast.
This is the same process I use when finding low-competition keywords.
So if you want to find keywords on which you can rank quickly, you’ll love this post.
Let’s get started.
First, let’s see what I meant for low competition. It can be different from person to person. But here I am just assuming that if low authority sites can rank then my site can too.
And I am taking here a metric “Domain Rating” from ahrefs to measure the authority for a website. I know many people don’t give a s*** about these metrics. Still, it can be used to check wheather small sites are ranking or not. To understand this let’s just get more info about domain rating.
What is Domain Rating?
Domain Rating is a proprietary Ahrefs’ metric that shows the strength of a target website’s total backlink profile (in terms of its size and quality).
DR is measured on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100, with the latter being the strongest.~ Ahrefs
Because domain ratings consider backlinks I think we can take this metric to gauge the authority of a site. Because backlinks are hard to get. If a site can rank without good backlinks or with few backlinks then your site too can rank even if it is a new site or if it’s old then chances are higher.
So, let’s start
First, you need two paid software:
- Ahrefs: For collecting the keywords and their SERP results.
- ClusterAI: For grouping the keywords.
Get the initial list of keywords with SERP Data
Let’s say we’re doing keyword research for supplement affiliate site.
Just enter the broad term like “protein powder” in keyword explorer.
Go to the “Having Same Terms” and filter the results by adding “best, top, review” modifiers in the include filter and keyword volume minimum “10”. You’ll get results like this.
Now let’s say you get a huge list. So, to narrow down the result and filter them with Keyword difficulty. We are using KD just to get fewer keywords.
Now tick the “Include SERPS” and export results.
Filter the Results
Once you’ve exported the results, apply these filters.
- Remove blank “DR”
- DR less than or equal to 15
- Traffic greater than or equal to 50
- Position less than or equal to 10
You can adjust the DR and Traffic Metrics as per the results you get and the competition you want.
Here is the result you’ll see before and after the filter. I’ve removed the other columns which are not required.
Now, you see some keywords are repeating. That’s because more sites are rankings based on your criteria.
Copy all the keywords and search volume then paste it in the google sheet.
After that use a formula on another column =Unique(A2:A)
This formula will only show the unique keyword i.e it will remove all the duplicate keywords.
Now use another other =countif($A$2:A,C)
This will show how many sites are ranking (based on the criteria you have set up in the excel sheet) for each unique keyword. More is better. Then sort them from higher to low.
Finally, you have a list of keywords in which low DR sites are ranking and they are getting traffic.
But did you notice? Few keywords have the same intent. So you can’t create a separate page of each keyword otherwise it will cause a keyword cannibalization issue.
In this case, we got a handful of keywords. So, we can check mannually the SERP of each keyword to group the same intent keywords and reduce the chances of keyword cannibalization.
Now, suppose you have a list of thousands of keywords. It would take hours to check the SERP for each keyword and come up with a final list where the keyword cannibalization won’t happen.
Here comes ClusterAI to save you hours of work.
Use ClusterAI for grouping keywords
What is ClusterAI?
ClusterAI is a keyword grouping tool. It groups the keywords with same intent based on the SERP data of each keyword. Thus saving hours in keyword research and also helps in avoiding keyword cannibalization problem.
Insert the list of keywords with search volume in ClusterAI. Let’s say I want all the keywords in which at least two sites are ranking based on my criteria. All these one.
Once ClusterAI processes all the keywords you will get results like this.
This is your final list. You’ll get the main keywords along with the combined search volume of all the similar keywords. You’ll know which keyword to target in your title, URL, and heading and also what other keywords you can add in the subheading and body of the content to also rank higher on those keywords.
The benefit of this process is that you’ll save credits in ClusterAI.
But if you’re doing keyword research at scale and do not care about ClusterAI credits then I recommend flipping the half of the above process I just showed. Here’s what I mean.
Flipping the half of the process. Instead of doing first
- Scraping SERP
- Putting Filters
- Insert the list of keywords in CluterAI
- Get the output of ClusterAI with main keywords
You can do
- Grab a list of keywords from Ahrefs like shown by Bojan from ClusterAI
- Put all of them in Cluster AI
- Now just put the main keyword from Cluster AI output again in ahrefs.
- Scrape the SERP of these keywords
- Apply the filters to get the keywords based on your criteria.
Strategy #2: Find Topics Ideas in which you can Rank within 1-3 Months Period.
Suppose you find a low authority that ranks for a keyword within 1-3 months.
Chances will be much higher for your site to rank quickly on page one for that keyword.
How do you find these keywords?
For that, first, you’ll need a list of low-authority sites that are getting good traffic.
This part you have done it already. When scraping the SERP from ahrefs, you’ll have a list of sites from low to high authority in your export file.
From that Excel sheet add just one filter: DR <15 or less if you want.
Now Grab all the sites and clean the list using Orange Fox URL list cleaner
Choose these options: TRIM TO ROOT, REMOVE HTTP VERSIONS & REMOVE DUPLICATE DOMAINS one by one and you’ll get above results
Next, run the batch analysis of these URLs in the ahrefs batch analysis. Then sort the results from traffic higher to lowest.
After that, open content explorer in a new tab.
Do a blank search. Pick one site from the list of batch analysis and insert it in the website filter, Set “Published” and “First Published” to 90 days. Then sort the results by Page Traffic.
And Boom you got post ideas which are published in the last 90 days and are getting traffic.
Check Organic Keywords in Details to get the keywords data.
Result from Another Site
That said, you won’t find many such topics from a single site or sometimes you won’t get any results. That’s why you need to go through each domain one by one and pick the topic’s ideas.
Over to You
There you have it. My a quick way to low competition keywords on which I can rank.
I think this method is very helpful in finding affiliate keywords.

And if I can improve this method let me know that too in the comments.
